Short answer
No, do not put play sand in a pool filter. Pool filter sand is screened to a narrow #20 grade, about 0.45 to 0.55 mm per Hayward. Play sand, masonry sand and all-purpose sand are finer and mixed in size. Fine grains pack the bed tight, so pressure rises fast and backwashes come often, and the smallest grains can slip through the laterals into the pool. Buy sand labeled for pool filters.
Why grain size matters
A sand filter works because uniform grains leave even gaps. Water runs through the gaps; dirt gets caught in them. Hayward’s manual specifies filter sand of 0.45 to 0.55 mm, and Quikrete’s pool filter sand is screened between US sieve #20 and #40. That narrow range is the product.
Mixed sand behaves differently. Small grains fill the gaps between big ones, so the bed is tighter, water pushes harder, and the dirt has nowhere to go but the top layer. The finest grains can pass through the slots in the laterals and back into the pool.

| Pool filter sand | Play or all-purpose sand | |
|---|---|---|
| Grade | #20, narrow range | Finer, mixed sizes |

| In a filter | Even flow, normal cycles | High pressure, short cycles, sand in pool |
| Made for | Swimming pool sand filters | Sandboxes, landscaping, concrete |
If you already used the wrong sand
- Watch the gauge. If pressure rises well above your clean reading within a day or two of backwashing, the bed is too tight.
- Check the pool floor. Fine sand near the returns means grains are passing the laterals. See sand in the pool.
- Replace it. Scoop it out and refill with pool filter sand: how to change pool filter sand.

Questions people ask
What happens if I use play sand in my pool filter?
Expect high pressure soon after each backwash, short filter cycles, and possibly fine sand in the pool. The fine grains also wash out to waste during backwash, so the bed level drops over time.
Can I use pool filter sand as play sand?
People do, but it is sold for filters, not play. It is coarser and dry crystalline silica, so the dust warning on the bag still applies, especially for children.
Is all-purpose sand the same as pool filter sand?
No. All-purpose and masonry sand are graded for concrete and mortar, with a wider mix of sizes. Use sand labeled as pool filter sand or #20 silica.
What about aquarium sand or blasting sand?
Only if the bag states the same grade your filter maker lists. Most aquarium and blasting sands are sold in other grades. When in doubt, buy pool filter sand.
