How often to change pool filter sand, and the signs

Sand does not wear out fast, but it does wear out. The grains round off, oils and scale cement them together, and the bed stops catching fine dirt. Here is the usual interval, and the signs that say it is time sooner.

Fig. 1 Three signs the sand is spent: water that will not clear, pressure that climbs back fast after each backwash, and clumped or crusty sand.

Short answer

Plan on changing pool filter sand every 5 to 7 years. Intex says every 5 years for its sand filter pumps; Inyo Pools suggests 5 to 7 years for inground filters, and a retailer listing for HTH sand says 3 to 5 with heavy use. Change it sooner if the water stays cloudy with good chemistry, the pressure climbs back quickly after each backwash, or the sand is clumped, crusty or oily.

The usual interval

Intex5 yearsFor its Krystal Clear sand filter pumps
Inyo Pools5 to 7 yearsOr sooner if water gets cloudier or backwashes come more often

Heavy use, lots of swimmers, sunscreen and oils, and hard water all shorten the interval. A lightly used pool with good chemistry can go longer.

Signs the sand needs changing

CLEARCLOUDYDAYS BETWEEN BACKWASHESGETTING SHORTERCLUMPED, CRUSTY OR OILY SANDafter years of use
Fig. 2 Cloudy water, shorter runs between backwashes, and clumps are the three signs to watch.
  1. Cloudy water that chemistry does not fix. If your chlorine, pH and alkalinity are in range and the pump runs long enough, but the water stays dull, the bed may not be catching fine particles.
  2. Shorter cycles. Leslie’s says that when the time between backwashes keeps getting shorter, it may be time to replace the sand.
  3. Pressure that will not come down. After a good backwash the gauge should return close to your clean reading. If it stays high, oils and scale may be binding the sand.
  4. Clumps, crust or channels. Open the tank and look. Hard lumps, a crust on top, or holes bored through the bed mean water is bypassing the sand.
  5. Age. Past 5 to 7 years with any of the above, replace it.

Most of these come from Leslie’s troubleshooting guide. If sand is showing up in the pool, read sand in the pool before you buy sand: a cracked lateral needs fixing during the change.

Questions people ask

Do you need to change pool filter sand every year?

No. Sand normally lasts years. Annual care is backwashing as needed and, for some owners, a sand filter cleaner once a season. Replace the sand when the signs appear or around the 5 to 7 year mark.

What does old pool filter sand look like?

Old sand can feel slick or greasy, form clumps or a hard crust on top, or channel so water bores holes through it. Fresh sand is loose, dry-feeling when drained, and angular.

Can I just add sand instead of replacing it?

Topping up hides the problem: the old sand is still worn and dirty underneath. If sand is low, find out why (often a cracked lateral) and replace the bed.

Does a sand filter cleaner extend sand life?

Cleaners are sold to break down oils and scale in the bed between changes. We have not tested them. Follow the label, and do not expect a cleaner to fix cracked laterals or very old sand.
